Boston Wealth Management Firm Turns to KTS for Data Room Organization

The Situation

A Boston wealth management firm reached out to KTS to help organize the racks in their data room. The head of IT at the firm had worked with KTS during his tenure at a previous employer, and reached out to them because of their proven reputation and his prior experience working with KTS.

The Work

The racks in the data room were in a chaotic state and needed to be organized to avoid operational disruptions should an issue arise. In addition to their other skills, KTS has gained a reputation for their expertise at data closet and data room makeovers.

KTS’ first task was to identify and label all the cords. This could be completed without disruption to daily firm operations. A detailed spread sheet was developed to document everything.

Once all the switch ports and panel ports were identified, the work of stripping the patch cords and configuring the organized data racks was scheduled to be done over a weekend so as not to disrupt productivity. As the work proceeded through the weekend, the customer performed random checks to confirm that everything was connected properly. The job was successfully completed and everything was up and running when employees returned to work Monday morning.

Challenges

One challenge was the importance of identifying and labeling all the patch cords to ensure reinstallation went smoothly. The other challenge was to make sure that the installation work was scheduled and completed successfully during off hours to ensure no disruption to the firm’s operations.

Benefits/Impact

The customer now has organized data racks in their data room enabling IT to expeditiously address any issues that may arise without having to unwind a tangle of cords to try to figure out which one they need. This makes issues easier to diagnose, faster to repair and minimizes accidents that could adversely affect daily operations.

IT is better equipped to do their job, with peace of mind that the data room is organized, well-labelled and they have a detailed reference guide to follow to understand all elements.
