Greater Boston Pharmaceutical Company Upgraded Surveillance System: KTS Ensures Safety and Security

Intro

A Boston-area pharmaceutical company is committed to improving patients’ lives by developing pharmaceuticals for patients whose needs are not adequately met. The company focuses on niche therapeutic markets in the US, including colorectal cancer prevention, dermatology and women’s health.

The pharmaceutical facility, located south of Boston, wanted to upgrade its security and surveillance system from analog to digital to better ensure the security of the facility. KTS was responsible for installation of the wiring and cabling.

The Work

The first part of the work was to install the wiring to support digital cameras in the warehouses. The facility was set up with multiple warehouse areas, side by side, separated by firewalls. To install the wiring in the warehouse, KTS needed to use the scissor lift to get their installers up 18 to 20 feet into the rafters of the building. The cabling extends through all sections of the warehouse, so KTS needed to break through the firewalls that separated the sections of the warehouse in order to install all of the necessary cabling.

An important part of the job of the installers is to ensure that the firewalls are properly closed again to maintain fire safety in the facility. KTS installers are manufacturer-trained and certified to determine the appropriate, certified fire stop materials and equipment needed to ensure that the firewalls maintain their integrity once the cabling and equipment are installed.

The second part of the project had KTS install cabling to the production rooms inside the pharmaceutical facility so that the production areas were also protected by surveillance equipment.

Challenges

A challenge of the project was coordinating on site so that the work KTS was performing did not impact the day-to-day operations in the warehouse or the production rooms and offices. Careful coordination with the warehouse manager and I/T department made this successful. The warehouse crews made sure that raw materials and stock were moved out of the areas where KTS was working, and they made sure to let them know when they needed to receive shipments so KTS was out of the way of the receiving doors so the warehouse crews could do their jobs. This was well choreographed between the warehouse manager and crew and KTS so everyone could get their work done.

Benefits/Impact

The pharmaceutical company has a state-of-the-art digital surveillance system with nearly 100 new cables installed throughout its warehouse, entrances and production rooms helping to ensure the security of the facility.
