Solar Company Connects with KTS to Find their Disconnect

The Situation

A national company that builds and maintains solar farms had an issue with one of its solar fields. Located in Massachusetts, the three-acre solar field with about a half mile of fiber optic cabling running through it, had a section of the field offline. They suspected that mice had chewed through the fiber optic cabling connecting that section of the solar field to the rest. The company reached out to a cabling company, who spent a full day inspecting the field and could not find the break in the cabling. Not satisfied with the unexplained break, the company found KTS through a search on the Internet and contacted them to find out if they could resolve the issue.

The Work

KTS arrived on the site with fiber optic testing equipment and located the site of the fiber optic break within 30 minutes. A temporary cable was run to get the offline section of the solar field back to full production until weather conditions would allow a permanent solution.

Challenges

New England weather in February did not permit use of the proper equipment to complete a full repair given winter elements. A temporary cable was run to get that section of the solar field back online. Weeks later when the temperatures warmed up, KTS returned to repair the break in the cabling for a permanent solution.

Benefits/Impact

The solar field is back on line at full production and supplying clean energy. The customer is happy with KTS’ work, especially the skill and speed with which the technicians diagnosed and repaired the situation.
