Insulet Reaches Out to KTS for EV Charging Station Connectivity

The Situation

Insulet, a long-time customer of KTS, has installed EV charging stations in a parking garage for its employees and visitors. Users need a cell signal in order to charge their cars and the concrete parking garage – like most parking facilities – did not have a reliable signal. The lack of reliable cell service in the parking garage is also a safety concern. Insulet sought to resolve both issues by improving the cell signal in the parking structure. They reached out to KTS to solve the problem.

The Work

KTS determined that a Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA) would resolve the issue. They identified the optimal location and installed the antenna on top of the five story parking garage. Then the KTS technicians ran cable from the top level of the garage to the bottom floor and installed a Wilson 4300 amplifier along with a panel antenna near the main charging stations to provide a strong signal. The KTS professionals also ran a conduit to additional charging stations on the same level and installed a dome antenna near this second set of charging stations to ensure a reliable cell signal.

Benefits/Impact

With the BDA installed, Insulet’s EV charging stations are fully functional enabling vehicle owners to connect and charge their cars while they are parked. Safety also improved because now parking garage users can receive and make calls and get emergency alerts.
