Tufts University Relies on KTS to Upgrade and Install Wiring and Cabling in Newly Renovated Science Building

The Situation

Tufts University was gutting, reconfiguring and renovating Bacon Hall, a science building on campus. As part of the larger project, a portion of the data room needed to be moved. Tufts has a long working relationship with KTS, so they reached out to their reliable communications infrastructure partner to help them with this renovation.

The Work

As part of gutting and reconfiguring the building interior, a portion of the data room needed to be relocated down the hall to a new room. During the move, Bacon Hall cabling was going to be replaced and upgraded with Cat 6 and single-mode fiber optic cabling. The single mode fiber will support expected future demands for more bandwidth.

Other campus buildings are supported by the data closet in Bacon Hall, so the data room relocation required KTS to identify, label and move the cabling which supports other buildings without disconnecting any of the cabling to maintain connectivity during the renovations. KTS was meticulous in making this happen seamlessly. KTS built temporary support structures to hold the cabling and maintain all connections as their work proceeded.

Challenges

Scheduling the work around other parts of the project and other trades was the biggest challenge to the KTS team. As with any large project, sometimes things don’t always go according to plan. KTS stayed on top of scheduling, ensuring that their team was available and on site during the appropriate windows of time to complete the data room move.

Benefits/Impact

Bacon Hall is now fully renovated and the classrooms and science labs are up and running. The data room has been relocated without disconnecting the other campus buildings that rely on that data room. The room is equipped for expected future bandwidth demand.
